Files App Can Now Create Files and Folders in Google Drive When Your Chromebook is Offline

What a great news! Google Drive file/folder creation is now possible in the Files App even when we’re offline in the last Dev update,
François Beaufort said on his Google Plus post today. Here is the official crbug.

So next time you are offline, go ahead and create files or folders on your Google Drive and it will automatically be synced to your cloud storage on Google Drive next time you connect to the internet.

Google+ Photos, Drive and Gmail Now Have 15GB Free Shared Storage

These days, Google is keen to unify their product offerings. And today’s the day when it comes to free storage. Rolling out today, users get a total of 15GB shared storage between Google+ Photos, Drive and Gmail. Free.

Shared storage means that users can decide how they want to use it. If you’re light on Gmail but heavy on Google+ photos, this means that you can use more free storage towards uploading full-resolution photos on Google+ than on Gmail. Before, you’d only have 5GB (10GB on Gmail) on each service, without the freedom of choosing what to do with the free storage.

Google+ and Chat integrated to documents in Drive

The web brings people together, a fact Google has always emphasized in all of its projects. But this is not only for fun, it also helps when taking care of work. Collaborating with multiple users in Google Drive documents makes getting through work a breeze, and it just got better. Google has integrated Google+ to Google Drive, bringing the unified social factor to your documents.

Google Drive will now display an image of other viewers in a document in the top-right corner of the browser. Hovering over these photos will display more details about the user and allow you to add them to your Google+ Circles. In addition, one can start a chat by simply pressing the chat icon next to the images.

These are small features that go a long way. We have no doubt this will somehow be integrated into Google’s rumored unified messaging service, Babel. So there is much more to expect, guys. Stay tuned for more details as Google I/O gets closer.

Dropbox and Other Cloud Storage Platforms To Get Deeper Chrome OS Integration Similar to Google Drive

chromebook Dropbox and Other Cloud Storage Platforms To Get Deeper Chrome OS Integration Similar to Google Drive

Chrome OS team is working on a new API for cloud storage services to act like another drive within the Files app. In other words, make them work just like Google Drive on your Chromebook. I like the way Dropbox integrates with my computer and Android phone. The experience is seamless. When this API is ready, I am assuming that Chrome OS will be ready to provide that experience with any cloud storage service that you would like to use.

Here is how it might look like, image courtesy of OMG Chrome.

Google Drive’s File Previews

Google Drive has a new feature that lets you preview files using an interface borrowed from Google+. This feature is not restricted to photos and videos, it also works for Google Docs documents, presentations, spreadsheets, forms, drawings, Microsoft Office files, PDF, PostScript and XPS files and TrueType fonts.

“When previewing a file, it’s easy to flip through nearby files by clicking the arrows on the left and right sides of the preview window. This is a great way to scan through a group of photos you’ve stored in your Drive,” explains Google. You can also use the left and right arrow keys to navigate to the other files and up/down arrow keys to scroll up/down in documents. While the previews don’t let you edit documents, you can select text, zoom in or out, find text (Ctrl+F), print the documents or share them with other people.
